A Message of Gratitude From School Leadership Dear RCHS Community, As the final days of the 2023-2024 school year come to an end, we are thrilled to announce the results of our first-ever RCHS Day of Giving. Historically, when we have made our needs known to our greater school community, our community has responded with high levels of participation, and we are excited to say that this has been true once again. Through emails, our Alumni Social, our Senior Parent Night, and newsletters, we have highlighted our Day of Giving, and you have responded in an amazing way. $27,783 in total to the Phoenix and Foundation Funds - $10,000 was our goal. 127 total # of gifts - 100 was our goal. 20 first-time donor gifts 25 alumni gifts - part of 61 total alumni gifts this year! Your contributions support both our essential operations and long-term goals. This year, donations made it possible to Offer more professional development opportunities such as AP workshops Bring in an external facilitator to assist us with our diversity and equity goals Provide our faculty with bonuses to improve our compensation package Support broadening our Flex and Community Work Day programs Move us closer to paying off our mortgage in order to increase teaching salaries Economic challenges from inflation to increased interest rates have made this year particularly difficult from a financial perspective. However, at $260,000 raised, we have met 80% of our Phoenix Fund goal. We appreciate the support of this small, dedicated community in helping us reach this level, and if you weren’t able to donate by the May 10 date, any gifts received by June 15 will still help us reach our 2022-2023 Phoenix Fund goal! Although we have not reached our initial Phoenix Fund goal and will need to tighten our belts a little bit across the board, we believe that our financial position remains solid and secure. With careful budgeting, we will weather this downturn and hope to return to a strong position next year. About the Counselors David Palmieri David Palmieri holds a BA in Geography from Vassar College, an MA in Education from the University of Colorado at Boulder and a Certificate in College Counseling from the University of California San Diego. Originally from Massachusetts, he moved to North Carolina from Colorado where he taught history and geography at Monarch High School for ten years. He has traveled extensively in Latin America and speaks Spanish in addition to English. Summer Assignments Raleigh Charter High School teaches students in an active, social, and creative model of learning that involves inquiry, discovery, and integrating disciplines. Below is a summary of what was shared that evening and in the recent Phoenix News: Raleigh Charter High School’s tax-exempt municipal bond (first secured in 2010 for $7,369,000) was paid off on Tuesday, November 18! We are so grateful for this community and the ways that we have all come together to reach this exciting milestone in our school’s history. Paying off the bond is an essential part of our Foundation Campaign progress because it allows us to increase teacher and staff salaries this year. Your generous contributions make this possible! We have one last step to go in completely retiring our debt by paying off our final $500,000 loan that we have received from the Russell Foundation. Every gift brings us closer to the finish line. Our first and immediate priority after paying off the building is to increase teacher salaries. Improving compensation is not only the right thing to do, it is imperative to our ability to continue to recruit and retain experienced educators. Their original vision relied on high-quality educators, and included compensating faculty at a level that adequately reflects their years of experience and dedication to our students and our school. Our teachers are at the heart of everything we do. Their hard work and steadfast commitment to our students and our school are the foundation of all we have accomplished and all we endeavor to accomplish in the future. Unfortunately, many of our experienced faculty members are being compensated at a level that is lower than what they could make teaching in a traditional local public school. This is our year to come together as a community to improve this reality for our teachers. The loan on our building is due at the end of 2025. Give Today A History of Heartfelt Support 1999 : A group of visionary parents and educators founded Raleigh Charter High School, and we opened our doors at Pilot Mill on Haynes Street. 2009 : After a decade of rising rental costs, our school leadership determined that it was time to find a permanent home for our school. The RCHS Foundation was established to help with the process of purchasing a building and securing the long-term financial stability of the school. Through a major capital campaign,our community raised over two million towards the purchase of the building. This included an incredible one million dollar anonymous gift. 2011 : RCHS moved to its permanent location at 1307 Glenwood Avenue. This move was made possible by our community’s generous financial support as well as hundreds of hours of volunteer work. 2017 : We introduced the Foundation Fund to serve as a fundraising vehicle for our goals and aspirations beyond the Phoenix Fund. Gifts to the Foundation Fund support two primary goals: steadily and sustainably increasing teacher salaries and maintaining our school building for the long term. Since its inception, current and past families have provided tremendous support to the Foundation Fund in recognition of our teachers and in appreciation of the education we provide. Spring 2020 : During the extreme anxiety and uncertainty of the pandemic, we received a gift that has truly accelerated our progress towards these goals. This anonymous $2 million gift brought us up to a new level where our goals are within reach. 2021 : Reinvigorated by this amazing gift, we launched a special initiative for the Foundation: The Foundation Campaign is focused on raising $1.5 million – the amount needed to pay off the building and free up funds for our teachers. 2025: As of January, our community had raised $550,000 for the Foundation Campaign leaving $950,000 left to raise in order to finish the campaign, pay off our loan, and achieve our forever dream of increasing teacher compensation. In March, the school community raised $170,000 (more than ever) on our third annual Day of Giving. As of May 16, the community had contributed an incredible $925,000 towards our goal and momentum continues to grow! At the end of our fiscal year, June 30, 2025, we surpassed $1,000,000 in donations!
