Raleigh Charter High School Profile for College Representatives.

In order to better inform our students and parents, our college counselors visit colleges and universities throughout the country in order to meet admission personnel and see firsthand the facilities and academic programs. Participation in regional and national professional organizations such as the Southern Association of College Admission Counseling (SACAC) and the National Association of College Admission Counseling (NACAC) helps the counselors stay informed about current issues, gather new ideas, publicize Raleigh Charter, contribute to the college admission profession, and develop the personal relationships that maximize options for RCHS students.

The counselors try to provide all students exposure to the college counseling process through panels of admission professionals, individual sessions with juniors and seniors, classroom visits for sophomores and freshmen, and visits from college representatives.  Representatives of colleges from across the country come to RCHS to visit with interested students.  These sessions provide valuable perspectives as students consider their options and then narrow their choices.  Through special programs such as Junior Night and Financial Aid Night allow parents/guardians to learn more about the college search process and financial aid options.

Three college counselors focus on the needs of each graduating class. Beginning in the Junior year the counselor works individually with a student and his/her parents/guardians to develop a specific college search plan for every family, partnering with the student and parents/guardians to find the best possible match between student and college. Criteria may include location, academic major, selectivity, size, special programs, athletic programs, extracurricular opportunities, and cost. Each student must complete the junior questionnaire and likewise each parent must complete the parent questionnaire prior to scheduling the junior conference. Each student is encouraged to research schools on his/her college list, attend college fairs, and visit campuses.

During the Senior year, the counselors work with the student to present him/herself most effectively through the transcript, essays, application forms, and letters of recommendation. The counselors will write the school letter of recommendation and ensure that the school’s portion of the student’s application reaches the college admission office by the specified deadline. College counseling will sponsor opportunities for students to learn essay writing tips, visit with current college students, and practice interviewing skills. In addition counselors assist the student throughout the year by advocating/troubleshooting on behalf of the student as colleges deliberate over applications as well as updating the student’s file with the college with additional information and advising/supporting the student after a decision is rendered on the application(s) as the student finalizes his/her choice. College counselors are here to assist families and students with strategies for making the college search less intimidating and more enjoyable.
