We believe that students learn more when they are active, social, and creative learners. Flex Days are one of the key innovations of RCHS that allow teachers and students to explore topics in depth, and often across disciplines. Flex Days occur once each semester over two successive Fridays during which regular classes are cancelled. Students instead meet for half day sessions in small groups to pursue projects in a subject area. Groups often travel off campus.
Examples of Flex Day activities include visiting classes at local universities; touring museums and historic sites, often with a special guide and focus; an election program featuring campaign panels of national, state and local candidates and their campaign managers from Democratic, Republican, Green & Libertarian parties; visits to Raleigh’s Hindu and Buddhist Temples; an Ecology/Biology study of stream quality; a math scavenger hunt at the NC Museum of Sciences; poetry out-loud competitions, film fests and Shakespeare and writing workshops. There are foreign language and art focused activities in addition to programs in science, math, history and English.
These programs are planned by the faculty in each academic department. The RCHS Community Liaison assists with the logistics. Parent volunteers are used to transport students and teachers to the many sites visited on Flex Days. They have the added benefit of learning with the students.
