NEWS AND NOTES

RCHS IN THE NEWS
Our search for a permanent home was the focus of a recent News & Observer article. As stated in the piece, we are taking final due diligence steps related to our top choice, 1307 Glenwood Avenue. In case you missed it, the link to the article is:
http://www.newsobserver.com/2010/04/15/437579/raleigh-charter-picks-3-sites.html?storylink=misearch

We are grateful for the many parents who attended our information meetings this spring and who have offered to share their time, talent and expertise for this exciting but daunting challenge. The early stages of project planning are underway. We shall keep you informed and request assistance as needs arise.

Most of all, we are grateful for the positive feedback and generous financial support received thus far in the process.
Carolyn Jackson, Alumni/Development Office

SOOTS' BLUESFEST TONIGHT: TIX STILL AVAILABLE
The Sustaining Roots Music Community Project of RCHS (SOOTS) is proud to host its Fourth Annual Bluesfest, featuring John Dee Holeman and Boo Hanks, tonight (Friday, April 23) at the Historic LongView Center on Moore Square, 118 S. Person Street.

Tickets are $10 and doors open at 7 p.m. Arrive early to save your spot to support elderly Piedmont Blues musicians. A foot stompin' good time is to be had by all.

All proceeds after cost go to the Music Maker Relief Foundation. For more details, see:
www.sootsblues.org

SOOTS would like to thank our many sponsors and patrons who have generously given to make this event and our community workday program a great success. Without such support our students would not be able to travel to blues luncheons, deliver medical mini-grants to artists or invite George Higgs and John Dee Holeman to record stories in our classroom. We are fortunate to have such a foundation for strong community-building.
Charles Montague, Sustaining Roots Music Community Project Advisor

CARPOOL TIME AGAIN!
Students who need carpool for next year need to register beginning May 1. You must register every year that you need carpool. From the RCHS website:
https://www.raleighcharterhs.org/studentlife/transportation.asp
Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the link "To submit your information to the Carpool database." Follow the instructions from there.

All information should be input by July 1. You will get information back about families in your area in early July. Questions? Email me at the address below.

STUDENTS RUN ELEMENTARY SCIENCE OLYMPIAD
Raleigh Charter High School hosted an Elementary Science Olympiad competition on April 17. There were 12 teams from New Bern, Greensboro, Selma, Wake County, and Chapel Hill who participated in 15 different events.

The entire competition was run by students from a citizenship group. These students wrote tests, graded tests, tested building devices, ran the awards ceremony, and compiled the results.

It was an uplifting day for over 140 students who participated in the tournament and the 20 Raleigh Charter community members who ran the event.

PARKING PERMITS FOR RISING JUNIORS AND SENIORS
It's lottery time again! Rising seniors and juniors can pick up parking-space lottery registration forms in the school office now. The completed forms will be accepted from Monday, May 3, to Friday, May 14.

IMPORTANT: Closing for lottery forms is 2:50 p.m. on Friday, May 14. No forms will be accepted after that time.

NO faxes, emails or phone calls will be accepted in place of the forms. All forms must be turned in to the office during the designated time frame. NO late applications will be accepted.

Students must have their driver's license by the first day of the next school year (August 11, 2010) to be considered. Seniors are given first priority in the lottery. The parking fee for the 2010-2011 school year is $220.00.

Results of the parking lottery will be posted May 17 outside the office.

Please contact me with any questions.

THANK YOU

TONS OF THANKS!
To all the parents who drove for our Community Work Day, I am ever so grateful! Special programs like Flex Days and Community Work Days are part of what make Raleigh Charter the special school that it is. Many teachers spend many hours putting these programs together. We appreciate the support of volunteers from our parent base. These activities happen because of our parents' ability to provide transportation.

We set the dates for Flex Days and Community Work Days early in the year so that parents can put them into their schedule. We appreciate your supporting our students and our school.

With deep appreciation,
Judy McDevitt, Community Liaison
jmcdevitt@raleighcharterhs.org

SPRING CLEAN THAT QUILTING FABRIC
Please donate any scraps or yardage of cotton material to the community work group for next year. We will make another beautiful quilt for a disabled U.S. Veteran. We prefer calicos, but any kind of woven (not knit) cotton cloth is accepted. The material can be brought to me in Room 306 anytime before or after school.
