THE PRINCIPAL'S CORNER

The Sibling Preference
The state's charter law allows us to give a preference in the lottery to qualified siblings of currently enrolled students. I happily clarify that for folks with students in eighth and twelfth grades. Your currently enrolled senior gives the sibling preference to your qualified eighth grader.

A student is qualified if she or he can attend public schools in North Carolina and meets the math requirement for grade nine, readiness for Algebra I or a higher math course. The sibling applicant, of course, must have submitted an application by February 25, 2010. Once the sibling applicant has met the qualifications, that student receives the "preference," otherwise known as an offer of admission to Raleigh Charter High School.

We have applications available at the school; applications can also be printed from our web site.

NEWS AND NOTES

SNOW MAKE UP DAYS TAKE AWAY TEACHER WORKDAYS
We shall make up the two days that we missed this week on these days: Monday, Feb. 15, 9:00-12:05, and Monday, Feb. 22, 9:00-12:05. This holiday and teacher planning day will be replaced by a half day of school.
Thomas Humble, Principal
thumble@raleighcharterhs.org

PUT COFFEE ON YOUR CALENDAR
Please join us at 8:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 9 in the Drama Room (Room 309) for coffee with the principal. If you'd like to bring a coffee-time treat, or a juice or a fruit plate, please contact me or Ruth Challener.

We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday. Parking is on Haynes Street.

Ruth Challener

FLEX DAY DRIVERS, PLEASE SIGN UP FOR AT LEAST ONE SESSION!
Go to your computers and sign up to drive for at least one session! We have 501 drivers on our list with an average of 4 seats per car. I've had a fair number of you offer to drive so far, but we still have students and teachers without a ride! Show me that Phoenix spirit and help us provide these programs that you know you brag about to your friends. So what if we don't have school buses - we have you (don't we?)!

Thank you.
Judy McDevitt, Community Liaison
jmcdevitt@raleighcharterhs.org

HABLA ESPANOL? NOS PUEDE ASISTIR? (SPEAK SPANISH? CAN YOU HELP?)
Our next Flex Days (Feb. 12 and 19) will include Foreign Language programs. Our Spanish teachers are looking for parents who are fluent in Spanish and can come speak with our students who are taking Spanish III, IV or AP. These kinds of programs are very important to the learning of our students.

It would also be great if some of you would be willing to make some kind of presentation to a group - just speak to them about something of interest to you. It might be about your favorite hobby or someplace you've visited. As long as it's in Spanish, we don't care!

And to show you how much we appreciate what you do, we will even feed you lunch if you're here at that time, and invite you to a reception for all of our Spanish speaking guests where you can eat more good food! Please let me know if you can help our Spanish department.
Judy McDevitt, Community Liaison

WINTER FORMAL FEB. 13
Mark your calendars! The Winter Formal dance will be on Saturday, Feb. 13, from 8 to 11 p.m. at the Royal Banquet and Conference Center . Tickets go on sale Feb. 8 in Room 310. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door.

Parents who are interested in helping out or chaperoning should contact me.

PHOENIX FUND MATCHING GIFTS MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Many parents have take steps to inquire about corporate matching gift programs. Every company has its own procedures and requirements, but the end benefit is tremendous.

One example of the impact of corporate support is the IBM gift matching program. By early December 2009, 16 RCHS parents had contributed to our school through IBM where each gift was matched 4:1, not in cash but in computer equipment for our school. Thanks to the generosity of our IBM families, Raleigh Charter will receive 14 laptops (plus extra memory for each) and 35 17-inch monitors for our students and faculty. Some of the equipment has already arrived.

This is just one example of how families can multiply their gifts. The Development Office has processed corporate match papers for GlaxoSmithKline, Alliance One International, Home Depot, Cisco, MeadWestVaco, Northwestern Mutual, NVIDIA, Qualcomm, RBC Bank and Verizon.

Thank you to the many families who have generously supported the Phoenix Fund. If you have not done so already, it is not too late. We are pushing toward the important goal of 100% participation and welcome all gifts.
Carolyn Jackson, Development Office

JUNIORS, IT'S COLLEGE COUNSELING TIME
For Junior parents: It is time for your students to schedule their college planning conference with their college counselor. Parents are welcome. Prior to the conference, please be sure the student completes the junior questionnaire and parents complete the parent questionnaire. Questionnaires are available on Naviance or the college counseling page of the RCHS website.

REGISTER NOW FOR AP EXAMS
AP Exams will be given at RCHS May 3–14. Registration deadline is March 26 and the cost is $86.00 per exam. Make checks payable to RCHS. Pay Mrs. Wall in the main office.

There is an online form for registration. You will still be required to print and sign the registration form; however, the online form makes it easier by automatically filling in most of the information for you. It also keeps track of your online AP exam registrations.

ADMISSIONS INFORMATION FOR 2010-2011
RCHS parents are reminded that although qualified siblings of current RCHS students receive preference in the lottery, applications for siblings must be filled out completely and submitted during the application window. Applications will be available at our Open Houses. They will also be available on the school's website beginning Jan. 25.

Applications to RCHS must be postmarked between Jan. 25 and Feb. 25, 2010. We will hold a public admissions lottery on Saturday, March 13, 2010.

Qualified siblings will be accepted prior to the lottery. To be qualified, siblings must have submitted an on-time, completed application including a math recommendation form indicating readiness for Algebra I or a higher math course.

If you have any questions about sibling admissions, please contact me.

DESIGN CONTEST WILL BENEFIT AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL
Think your child has the makings of a young Monet or Picasso? Here's your chance to prove it. Encourage your son or daughter to enter Amnesty International's T-shirt Design Contest!

Until Feb. 15, Amnesty International Club will be holding an artistic competition to design the brand new 2010 shirts. Entry is free and the winner will get to see their design sported on the shirts of hundreds of students around school. T-shirts will be sold as a fund-raiser later in the year.

Entry folders and personal information slips can be found outside the office and the art room. When you're done, slip it in the entry folder, along with an information sheet. After all entries have been submitted, we will choose our winner. All entries must include the phrase: "STOP Violence Against Women."
M. Khater, RCHS Chapter President
Amnesty International

RCHS SCIENCE STUDENTS WILL BOWL OVER THE COMPETITION
Ocean Science Bowl
Raleigh Charter will send a team of five students to Wilmington to compete in the National Ocean Sciences Bowl State Tournament this weekend, Feb. 6. Teams study all areas of science, marine policy, technology, and history as they relate to oceans. The winner of the competition will compete in the National Tournament in May.

Science Olympiad
Raleigh Charter will take four teams to the Regional Science Olympiad competition on Feb. 13 at Garner High School. The four teams with a total of 18 students per team will each compete in 23 different events that utilize engineering, studying, process skills, and teamwork. If the Varsity team is in the top 6 teams, RCHS would advance to the state tournament in April. Of the 50 teams that qualify for the state tournament, 2 teams advance to the national tournament at the University of Illinois this year. RCHS has qualified for nationals five of the last six years and has finished 12th two years ago and tied for 10th last year.

Wish them luck.
