THE PRINCIPAL'S CORNER

NORTH CAROLINA'S STATE REPORT CARD
Each year, the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) issues a State Report Card that defines how each public school across the state performs on various measurements. In advisories on Thursday, Oct. 29, we distributed part of this report card. Thursday is the official release date for the state report card.

The site for viewing the entire report card for our school and those of other public schools is:
http://www.ncreportcards.org

Our data look good for 2008-2009. Our students are continuing to do well on the End-of-Course Tests and on other measurements like SATs and graduation rate.

NEWS AND NOTES

PARENTS, YOU'RE INVITED
Opportunity for Parents! The first Coffee with the Principal is coming up on Wednesday, Nov. 4, at 8:45 a.m. in the Drama Room (309). Don't miss the time with Dr. Humble and with other parents.

If you have questions or if you wish to bring a "coffee-time treat" to the event, please contact me. We're looking forward to seeing you!
Ruth Challener

THANK YOU FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE DAY
A really big thank you goes out to all the parents who came forth to drive and help bring order to a chaotic morning on our Oct. 23 Community Service Day! These kinds of events can only happen with the help of our parents.

When the call for drivers goes out for one of these days, please, please sign up early! You have no idea how that one thing can help toward making a successful, smooth-running day. We are only as strong as the links in the RCHS chain and you parents are one of the BIGGEST links holding these special programs together. Thank you again.
Judy McDevitt, Community Liaison
jmcdevitt@raleighcharterhs.org

ARE YOU A MEMBER OF PASTA?
72.5% of RCHS families are PASTA members. PASTA, RCHS' Parent, Administrator, Student, Teacher Association , provides the school with funds for:

--The Second Friday Event
--Coffee with the Principal
--Special Events
--Teacher Appreciation throughout the year
--Volunteer Support
--Start-up dollars for teachers
--The Founders' Award—a scholarship program
--Student assistance
--Building & Grounds maintenance

This year, due to funding cut backs from the State, PASTA contributed money for teacher bonuses which they would not have otherwise received. The teachers really appreciated this! Also due to funding cutbacks, PASTA contributed money to maintain the Flex Programs which would have been dropped.

Your membership is important to keeping our school at a high level of education for all students. PLEASE consider joining. To join, please send in $20 to the school office with checks made out to PASTA. We need 100% of our families' support. Thanks!
Pete Cotter, PASTA President

PHOENIX FUND UPDATE
The Phoenix Fund has received a donation from 64 RCHS families, a couple of grandparents, and RCHS faculty and staff members. Some have chosen to pay monthly, others quarterly and some have included corporate match forms. We are looking for 100% participation (which means every family contributes.) Why? So that when, in the future, we approach corporations and foundations for support we can proudly say that we have strong support from within our community.

If you are a state employee, the deadline for donating to RCHS through the State Employees Combined Campaign is Oct. 30. Look for RCHS under "Independent Charities" (charity #3624).

To donate to RCHS through The Federal Employees Combined Campaign, designate RCHS by choosing charity #15467.

Corporate matches help tremendously by multiplying a contribution. To view a list of some of the matching gift companies in the area, go to:
http://www.raleighcharterhs.org/giving/MatchingGifts.asp

The process is usually simple. The employee/donor completes a matching gift form provided by the employer. The form is completed by the employee, given to RCHS for validation and then is sent from RCHS to the matching gift office of the organization. Just like that, your gift can be multiplied.

To download a donation form, type in the following to your web browser:
http://www.raleighcharterhs.org/giving/donationcard.pdf

For delivery to RCHS, you may use the U.S. Mail or a student courier. If you have questions, contact information is below.

Thanks to all who have and who will help us reach 100% participation!
Carolyn Jackson, RCHS Alumni and Development Office
cjackson@raleighcharterhs.org

STILL HAVEN'T LINKED YOUR STORE CARDS?
Simple fundraising for our school — Update your customer cards for the new school year!

Several stores where you shop have school rewards programs that give money back directly to our school. Right now Harris Teeter, Target, Food Lion and Office Depot send us checks based on our shopping. We received OVER $2,800 during the last 12 months, but this total could be much higher. We need to continue these simple programs and link many more families with these participating stores.

It's easy. Click on the link below, which is part of the Raleigh Charter website:
https://www.raleighcharterhs.org/pasta/simplefund.asp

Take out your customer cards and type in your information to participate. MOST REQUIRE US TO "RELINK" EACH YEAR to continue in the program, so update your information even if you have entered it before. If you link your customer cards now, you should be set for the school year. Ask extended family members to link their cards also!

If you've been waiting for Food Lion to revise its registration page so you can link your MVP card, you need wait no longer. Food Lion has made the necessary changes, and the page is now available online.

We are always looking for new businesses with these programs. If you know of one, or if you have any questions, please email me.

BRING QUESTIONS TO SCHOLARSHIPS/FINANCIAL AID NIGHT
Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010, at 7 p.m. in Room 309 (Drama Room)

If you don't know the answer to the following question, you should probably plan to attend the scholarships/financial aid night program at 7 pm. on Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010, in Room 309 (the Drama Room).

Q: If my parents have saved money for college education, will we qualify for financial aid?

A: Tucking away money could mean you have fewer loans to repay, and it won't mean you're not eligible for aid if you need it. A family's share of college costs is calculated based mostly on income, not assets such as savings.
Kern Hairston, College Counselor

RCHS STUDENTS ROW IN BOSTON REGATTA
Six Raleigh Charter High School students, T. Dean, A. Jones, S. Jones, B. Munger, M. Ring and K. Shyrock, were selected to participate in Boston's "Head of the Charles" Regatta on Oct. 18. These students are members of the newly organized Triangle Rowing Club, which is a merger of the former Raleigh Charter High School team and Wake Rowing Club. The Head of the Charles is a 5-kilometer course. It is the largest regatta in the world, and attracted 8,200 rowers from 17 countries, plus 250,000 spectators.

WE'RE OFF AND ROLLING
The 23-member RCHS bowling team started their second season with a match against Broughton High School on Monday. The season runs through mid-February and includes matches against seven other Wake County high schools, including Broughton, Millbrook, Wakefield, and Green Hope. The matches are quite intense, usually utilizing all the lanes at the bowling alley. Matches include two sets of trios and three games of Baker. It takes five team members to bowl one Baker game, with each member bowling just two frames.

The ladies' team soared to a victory over the Broughton ladies' team with a score of 31-1 after the trios and with a final score of 51-6. The men's team bowled over the Broughton's men's team with a final score of 42-15.

Congratulations to Z. Gusse for earning the high score of the day for RCHS with a 182 game and to E. Hill for a nice 175 game. B. Lampe led the ladies with a high score of 136.

Congratulations, Phoenix bowlers!

Our next match will be at Buffaloe North, our practice facility, on Monday, Nov. 4 at 3:30. Spectators are welcome. Come experience the energy!

The soccer team ended its regular season with a 3-1 loss to NCSSM and a 7-0 win against Granville Central. The team finished with 10 wins and 8 losses. We are still waiting for word on the playoffs. Should we get in, our first-round game will be Tuesday or Wednesday of the week of Nov. 1.
