THE PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Let's agree to call it H1N1, and let's recognize that this flu virus can be combated as other flu viruses are combated. H1N1 is, of course, a very serious strain of influenza.
Here are some of our emphases:

1. Wash your hands with soap and water several times a day.

2. If you sneeze, do so into your elbow or a tissue. However, if you sneeze into your hands, wash your hands with soap and warm water thoroughly. For the flu season, let's stop shaking hands and giving high fives.

3. Avoid touching your mouth, eyes, and nose with your bare hands.

4. We shall be asking for donations of wipes for wiping down desks during the day. It's a good health practice. Wiping down a desk itself promotes good health and raises everyone's consciousness about flu as well.

5. If you are sick, please stay home. Please stay home for at least 24 hours after you a have a fever or signs of a fever, without the use of fever-reducing medicines. Much is made of falling behind academically at our school. We can work it out. If you are sick, stay home, and stay home while you are sick. Accommodations can be made for making up work and recovering your studies. Think of the community. Stay home if you are sick. Please.

6. If you have a persistent fever, please contact your medical provider.

7. If you start becoming sick while you are at school, let your teacher know and come to the office to call your parents. (We'll be wiping down telephones used by multiple students.)

8. Drink plenty of water and other fluids, but don't drink someone else's drink! Sharing drinks and sharing food are not good-health practices. Don't ask, and if asked, don't cooperate. Here's a script: "The principal has asked me not to share my drink."

I hope that we can be a very well prepared school for any flu viruses that will be circulating during this season.
Thomas E. Humble, Principal

NEWS AND NOTES

WIPING OUT THE H1N1 GERMS – SEND IN WIPES, PLEASE
Please send a box or canister of disinfectant wipes to your student's advisory class after the Labor Day weekend. If you would like to donate more, please feel free to send several boxes. The office will distribute the wipes to all teachers.

Sanitizing the desk areas would be a head start to prevent a widespread outbreak of this virus on our school campus.

Please emphasize the importance of wiping down desks with your student. An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure. Let's try our best to keep our campus sanitary and hope that not too many students will be affected by the spread of the H1N1 virus or any other flu virus.

Thank you for your help!

BACK TO SCHOOL FOR PARENTS
Parents, be sure to mark your calendars for an important upcoming event:
***10th-11th-12th-Grade Back to School Night, Thursday, Sept. 10

You will follow the schedule of your student(s), giving you the opportunity to meet teachers, learn about the curriculum for each class AND hear important updates about the school and our search for a permanent home.

Visitation for 1st period will begin at 6:30 p.m. (7th-period visitation will be at 6:20.)

Students will bring home schedules for you to follow. Be sure to bring the schedule with you.

After visiting teachers, there will be a Back to School Meeting with the Principal. Dr. Humble, some staff members and PASTA leaders will share information about this year's budget realities, how we have dealt with them and how parents can help. The meeting will also include an update on the search for a permanent home.

Come early to find parking. We look forward to a full house on these two evenings.
Shayne Klein, Academic Dean and History Teacher

HOODIES ARE HERE!
Parents, remember to bring your checkbooks to our Back to School Nights. The new Phoenix hoodies have arrived and will be available for purchase. We also have terrific-looking zippered jackets, sweatpants and more T-shirts for sale. Look for the Spiritwear table and come support our Phoenix athletes!

BE MINDFUL OF PEANUT ALLERGIES
This year we have students with severe peanut allergies. We want to pass along some reminders:

It is important to clean up your area after you eat to reduce the chance of an allergic reaction. Hand washing both before and after meals will prevent cross contact.

Thank you for your help to keep all of our students safe.

CAN YOU HELP?

ENGLISH FLEX NEEDS SUPPLIES
The English Department is introducing a new Flex program for juniors: Playing With Words. As part of this game-centered Flex, students will create their own language- or book-centered games for use in classes.

We are asking for donations of the following materials to help with this project:
- dice
- game pieces (perhaps from old or incomplete games)
- poster board and cardboard (for game boards, cards, etc.)
- construction paper
- glue sticks
- old magazines, stickers, or anything else to help decorate games
- cardboard gift boxes (small squares or rectangles) to hold individual games

Supplies can be dropped off in Room 209. Thank you for your help!

MUSE ON THIS – MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Do you want to meet other RCHS parents? Do you want to be part of an event that will benefit the majority of the students and RCHS as a whole?

For several years Muse, the Fine Arts parent support group, has sponsored the adult social event for the RCHS community. This year's planning committee is looking for a few new members. Your child does not have to be in a Fine Arts class for you to be on this team. If you want to be part of this important project, please contact Gloria Rich. If you want to get more information before signing up, call Janie Cole or Tracy Whitt.

DRIVERS WELCOME FOR PICASSO TOUR
Spanish III students will be traveling to the Nasher Museum at Duke to tour the Picasso exhibit. We will leave the school at 10:15 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 9, and return to the school at 1 p.m.

Drivers are welcome to tour the exhibit (in English) with us. Please e-mail me if you'd like to help transport students. Thanks.

DRAMA DEPARTMENT NEEDS A COUCH
The Drama Department is looking for a large couch (about 6 ft.) that can be donated to the program. It needs to be in good shape, given the use it gets. Many thanks!

HAVE YOU LINKED YOUR STORE CARDS?
Simple fundraising for our school — Update your customer cards for the new school year!

Several stores where you shop have school rewards programs that give money back directly to our school. Right now Harris Teeter, Target, Food Lion and Office Depot send us checks based on our shopping. We received OVER $2,800 during the last 12 months, but this total could be much higher. We need to continue these simple programs and link many more families with these participating stores.

It's easy. Click on the link below, which is part of the Raleigh Charter website:
https://www.raleighcharterhs.org/pasta/simplefund.asp

Take out your customer cards and type in your information to participate. MOST REQUIRE US TO "RELINK" EACH YEAR to continue in the program, so update your information even if you have entered it before. If you link your customer cards now, you should be set for the school year. Ask extended family members to link their cards also!

Note: Food Lion is revising their registration page and it will be available online later in September. We will remind you again once the link is up.

We are always looking for new businesses with these programs. If you know of one, or if you have any questions, please email me.

ALL ABOUT TRANSPORTATION

RESPECT THE TRAFFIC FLOW
With a new school year, we work hard to ensure that our clients are well served and that our students are very safe during the drop-off and pick-up times. We have developed and tweaked our time-tested flow of traffic that will create a safe and efficient system. We encourage our parent and student drivers to become familiar with this system: our system is grounded in student safety. Our system depends on your cooperation.

One outlier can create confusion, disorder, and a crack in safety in our system. If you need to circumnavigate the system, may we suggest that you use Oak Chase Street in Capital Park? The alleyways in Capital Park and private linking lane between Harp and Haynes Streets (the private street that borders our parking lot) are not appropriate alternatives. Using the Halifax Community Center lot as a car pool drop-off or pick-up location jeopardizes our ability to use the center for athletics and other school events.

Please drive slowly and carefully through our surrounding neighborhoods, watching for children in the neighborhoods, at Raleigh Nursery School, and at Hope Elementary School. Also, please watch for workers in these communities.

As you line up for afternoon car pools, please leave spaces in the driveways and streets for our neighbors and for our delivery persons to conduct their business.

I appreciate your cooperation. With 542 students, we are larger than we have ever been before, but we can operate in a safe, sensitive, and cooperative manner. Please review the information we have provided on dropping off and picking up.
Thomas E. Humble, Principal
thumble@raleighcharterhs.org

FOLLOW THE CAR POOL ROUTE
We ask that all parents strictly follow the car pool route, regardless of what time you arrive at the school. Please follow the directions of the teacher traffic directors and treat them respectfully. These rules are in place for the safety of students, parents, and teachers. It is recommended that parents communicate with their students about pick-up time and consider arriving at school later than 2:40 p.m.

Families may not use the Halifax Community Center, the Raleigh Nursery School, or 1101 Haynes Parking lots for pick-up and drop-off. Utilizing these lots jeopardizes RCHS's relationship with its neighbors.

Morning Drop-off:
Parents are to enter Cedar Street from Blount Street and should drop off students adjacent to the student parking lot on Cedar Street. Cars should stop before passing the intersection of Haynes Street , careful to keep that intersection clear. Cars should not stop on the other side of Haynes Street on Cedar. Unless they are coming into the school themselves, parents should never turn onto Haynes Street in the morning to drop off students.

Afternoon Pick-up:
Parents are to enter Cedar Street from Blount Street and should pick up students adjacent to the student parking lot on Cedar Street. Cars should stop before passing the intersection of Haynes Street , careful to keep that intersection clear. Cars should not stop on Cedar after crossing Haynes Street.

Drivers who arrive before 2:35 p.m. may pull into Haynes Street, drive around the cul-de-sac at the end, and park along the school-side of Haynes Street. Two-way traffic must be maintained on Haynes Street at all times; car pools may only use the school-side of the street. No parents or students may enter Haynes Street between 2:40-3 p.m.

For those drivers parking on Haynes Street, the first driver in the afternoon pick-up should align the vehicle with the front of the school building. No vehicles should park between the front of the school and the stop sign at the corner of Haynes and Cedar. In order to facilitate student drivers who are leaving campus, no cars should stop or park on the parking lot side of Haynes Street . The car pool line on Haynes Street will be closed on Flex Days and Community Work Days.

When exiting Haynes Street, parents and students must turn right onto Cedar. They may neither turn left nor go straight across Haynes Street.

At no time of day may drop-off or pick-up vehicles use the access road behind the student parking lot between Harp and Haynes Streets.

Visitor Parking:
Visitors to the school should park along Haynes Street adjacent to the school and should check in at the front office before going to any other school facilities. Because of afternoon car pooling needs, visitors who arrive at school between 2:00 and 3:00 p.m. should park in the cul-de-sac at the end of Haynes Street or in any empty spaces in the front student and faculty parking lot.
Shayne Klein, Academic Dean and History Teacher
sklein@raleighcharterhs.org

STILL NEED A RIDE TO SCHOOL?
The Carpool database is now closed. If anyone needs help with car pool, please contact me by email or by phone. Thanks.

QUIZ BOWL TEAM: BACK ON THE ATTACK
The Quiz Bowl team will be holding their meetings on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons this year. The meetings will begin in Room 300 and go from 2:50 to 4:00. New students interested in joining the team are particularly welcome. If you have ever watched "Jeopardy" and realized that you knew as much or more than the reigning champion, then Quiz Bowl is for you. We will train you and provide you with the study material you'll need.

Last year, our team placed first in a national competition, and we've been first in the state since the state started having competitions. If you're interested in joining up, please drop by and talk to either Mrs. Newmark in Room 300 or Mr. Grunden in Room 308. Or send us an e-mail.
