THE PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
LOOKING BACK, EMBRACING THE
FUTURE
Thank you to the many families who attended one of the Community Meetings
about the search for a permanent home. We fielded many good questions and
received many creative ideas from our audience members.
Anyone who attended has a better understanding of charter school economics
and the realities of the RCHS budget, particularly the cost for our space.
In addition, everyone knows more about the work done by our Development
Office to lay the ground work for purchasing a permanent home. And finally,
all participants realize our need for help as we handle the tasks ahead.
Everyone should know that we would like to stay at Pilot Mill and are
working hard to see if that is possible. We are also working on
alternatives. For a new site, we will need 40,000-45,000 square feet on 4-6
acres and believe that will cost about 10 million dollars. We can
comfortably borrow up to 8 million dollars which means we need to raise 2
million.
In the months ahead, PASTA and the Development Office will be working on
fundraising for operational support (the Phoenix Fund, formerly the PASTA
Pot) and fundraising for the purchase of a building (capital support). We
ask all community members to plan on giving their time, talents, and
financial support.
If you have questions, ideas, or suggestions related to our quest for a
permanent home, please contact one of us.

Each year the Executive Committee reviews PASTA bylaws and offers any
amendments. This year the proposed amendments reflect changes in language
along with changes in the Purpose statement, Board structure, and job
responsibilities of the VP of Fundraising. Again, we are asking the PASTA
membership to review the proposed amendments:

RCHS STUDENTS WORK TO END
HUNGER
In the current economic climate, times are tough for everyone, but
especially for people who are food-insecure. Food insecurity is an often
overlooked issue that affects millions of people both in the U.S. and
abroad, and so it was the mission of our citizenship group, "Glean the
Fields," to find ways that we as high school students could contribute
toward alleviating this problem.
In the fall, our citizenship group went to a field to glean sweet potatoes.
The sweet potatoes that we gleaned went to the Society of St. Andrew to help
feed the hungry. We spent a weekend morning picking up the sweet potatoes
that the farmers had left behind in the field, and we then delivered the
sweet potatoes to a woman who distributed them in her neighborhood.
For the spring Community Workday, our citizenship group's efforts to aid the
hungry went global. After gleaning the fields to help feed local
food-insecure families, we turned our attention to the issue of hunger as it
affects people across the country and the world. We created our own
fund-raising and awareness campaign against hunger. The details—the methods,
the organization, and the group to which we would donate the money—were all
up to us.
The Strategy
After conducting some research into various hunger-related organizations and
brainstorming ways to spread our message, we came up with a three-pronged
approach.
First, we would try to get the issue some publicity—we would make posters,
write a Phoenix News article, and deliver daily announcements informing the
students of Raleigh Charter about hunger and food insecurity.
Next, we would conduct a "lunch fast," inspired by the "30-Hour Famine" that
several students had previously participated in outside of school, in order
to further raise awareness for our cause. On Wednesday, May 13, no subs will
be sold. However, Phoenix Foods will still sell food and students not
participating in the fast are welcome to bring their lunches.
Finally, we would send students around at lunch with collection jugs to
receive donations from students, and we would donate the money to Stop
Hunger Now. Money will be collected now through May 13. Anyone wishing to
donate may write a check to RCHS and put Stop Hunger Now in the memo line.
Stop Hunger Now is a Raleigh-based nonprofit organization that accepts and
redistributes donations of food, money, and medicine to ease the weight of
hunger on the 963 million people who currently do not have enough food to
live. Through its "Operation Sharehouse," Stop Hunger Now stores food from
donations in warehouses around the globe, and while it works on a worldwide
scale, it depends on local donations. With over 13 million meals in total
going to over seventy countries, Stop Hunger Now continues to grow. To visit
its website or make a donation, please visit:

MEMORIES IN THE
CORNERS OF MY MIND (AND ATTIC)
In preparation for the June 6 reunion, the Alumni Office is looking for old
articles about Raleigh Charter High School or its students. If you have a
stash of these (and can find it) please send a COPY (not your originals) to
me. Students can drop off copies either in the office or at my office on the
200 hall.

GRADUATION
PROJECT OPTIONAL FOR CLASS OF 2010
The N.C. State Board of Education has voted to delay the Graduation Project
requirement. The Class of 2010 is no longer required to complete the project
for graduation. We realize that some students may have heard this news with
a feeling of relief. At the same time, we want to recognize the hard work
and energy that many students have put into their projects already.
While we began the Graduation Project at RCHS in order to fulfill state
requirements, we also value the opportunity it provided for our students to
grow as independent thinkers and doers, as citizens committed to a social
issue. Therefore, we are offering the Class of 2010 the opportunity to
continue with an altered version of the Graduation Project if they choose to
do so.
More specific information about the project and its benefits will be sent
home with the students. It is also available on the Graduation Project web
page:
https://www.raleighcharterhs.org/studentlife/gradproject.asp
If you have other questions, please contact me.

SPORTS BOOSTER CLUB NEEDS
LEADERS

Booster Club Leadership. We must fill the position of 2009/2010 Sports
Booster Club President, President-Elect, Secretary, and Treasurer. Please
help.
The Sports Booster Club plays an essential role in encouraging school spirit
(e.g., via the "Tailgate" party held each fall, providing Phoenix "Spirit
Wear" for sale, and recognizing our student-athletes at the year-end
Athletic Awards Ceremony) as well as generating funds necessary to
supplement team uniforms and expenses for coaches' travel.
Our annual goals, while important, are modest. We are in desperate need of
volunteers to ensure that the Sports Booster Club can continue next year. If
you have even a few hours to spare, please come to the May meeting (see
below) and/or contact Jack Bulkley, Phyllis Hill, or Dee Dee Mladsi at the
addresses below. Thank you for your help.
