THE PRINCIPAL'S CORNER

SECOND FOUNDING
This article will be offered occasionally as we have news about the prospect of a move to 1307 Glenwood Ave. At this time, we are moving forward with caution, directedness, great hope, and caution.

Our school has two boards. The Raleigh Charter High School Board of Directors (School Board) operates the school and meets monthly. The Raleigh Charter High School Foundation Board of Directors (Foundation Board) supports the school and meets several times a year, more often recently. The Foundation Board will hold the assets of the School; the School cannot hold assets. Each board directs and manages a non-profit 501 (c) (3) corporation.

Parallel to our two Boards are our two fundraising initiatives. The Phoenix Fund, which replaced the PASTA Pot in 2009, solicits contributions that help with our annual expenses of operating the school. Parent donations have always been welcomed and much appreciated, never more so than in the last two years when state funding to all public schools has decreased. The Capital Campaign solicits contributions for the school's long-term viability: this campaign is successfully raising funds for our prospective move to the Glenwood property. The Phoenix Fund pays for today; the Capital Campaign pays for tomorrow.

News: We have completed City approvals, we are working with a bank to obtain funding for our new property, and we are progressing with all the regulations that govern the tax-advantaged bonds we shall use. Simultaneously, we are working with an architect and a general contractor on the conversion of an office building to a school building. We regularly solicit input and feedback from staff through a building committee of 15 staff members, led by Whit Hames. In our Extended Advisories, we have gotten a lot of input from our students on how they envision using the new space.

We have loved dearly Pilot Mill. Our buildings have a great deal of history and character, and the differences between our site and a conventional school site has meant a lot to our clientele. We are moving from buildings that are just over 100 years old to a building that is 50 years old. There will still be history, but we'll miss the high ceilings, large windows, 14-inch pine beams milled in Tupelo, Mississippi or repurposed from another mill in South Carolina, and the wooden duck on the wall above the foreign-language lab. We shall begin to create a new chapter in our history. Perhaps the first step will be to talk with our architect about finding the perfect spot for a wooden duck in the 1307 Glenwood building.

NEWS AND NOTES

SECOND FRIDAY SUCCESSFUL, PASTA MEETING COMING UP
Second Friday was a great success! Thank you to all of the wonderful parent volunteers who sent in drinks, coolers, ice and who helped set up, serve and clean up afterwards. Special thanks go to Julie Lowe and Susan Dixon for organizing the food and drinks for this event. Also, thanks to the Key Club and SGA for helping with clean up and recycling.

We had a wonderful turn out and everyone seemed to have a good time. It is amazing to see all of the active clubs and organizations available at RCHS.

PASTA looks forward to seeing the parents of 10th - 12th grades on Thursday, Sept. 2 at the Back to School night. We will be introducing our officers and voting on the proposed PASTA budget for 2010/2011. You may review the proposed budget at:
http://www.raleighcharterhs.org/pasta/pastabudget2010-2011.asp

Stop by our table on the patio to join PASTA, purchase Entertainment Books and buy additional RCHS car magnets.
The next PASTA Board meeting will be held on Thursday, Sept 16 in Room 310 at 8:30 a.m.

CARPOOL ROUTE REMINDER
Raleigh Charter is only one of many enterprises located in the Pilot Mill facilities. For this reason, it is important that we do our best to prevent unnecessary traffic problems. We ask that all parents strictly follow the carpool route, regardless of what time you arrive at the school. At no time of day may drop-off or pick-up vehicles use the marked private alleyway behind the student parking lot between Harp and Haynes Streets.

Morning Drop-off
Parents should travel south on Blount Street, make a right onto Cedar Street (traveling towards Halifax), and should drop off students in front of the school on Cedar Street. Cars should stop before passing the intersection of Haynes Street, careful to keep that intersection clear. Unless they are coming into the school themselves or dropping off students with large instruments at the Music House, parents should never turn onto Haynes Street to drop off students.

Afternoon Pick-up
The afternoon carpool route can make use of Haynes Street. Drivers who arrive before 2:35 may pull into Haynes Street, drive to the cul-de-sac at the end, and park along the school-side of the Haynes Street. Two-way traffic must be maintained on Haynes Street at all times; carpools may only use the school-side of the street.

The first driver in the afternoon pick-up should align the vehicle with the front of the school building. No vehicles should park between the front of the school and the stop sign at the corner of Haynes and Cedar. No cars should be parked on the other side of the street adjacent to the student/faculty parking lot in order to facilitate student drivers who are leaving campus. The carpool line on Haynes Street will be closed on Flex Days and Community Work Days.

Drivers who arrive after 2:35 p.m. should follow the morning drop-off route for pick-up as well.

Please be cautious of all drivers turning onto Cedar Street from Haynes Street. Students not involved in school-related after school activities should be picked up by 3:10 p.m. After 3:10 p.m., the rules of parking on Haynes Street are relaxed.

Thank you for your assistance in keeping the area safe and keeping traffic flowing.
