House on Mango Street

Date

Due

In Class

Homework

Mon
Apr 5

-hand back poetry test; discuss
-read “House on Mango Street” p. 3-5 of HMS together,
-discuss: what the houses reveal about Esperanza and her family, the American dream, and making inferences from the test

-Journal #18: In HMS, the narrator uses personification to describe one aspect of her house: “windows so small you’d think they were holding their breath” (4).  For your journal, use “House on Mango Street” as a model and write a description of your own house that uses personification and reveals things about yourself and your family.  You can state some things directly, but other things should have to be inferred.  Note: you do not have to describe your entire house.  This entry should be only 1-2 paragraphs long.  Focus on what is important about your house.

-Internet Research: open the document and follow the directions on it.

Tues
Apr 6

-read through page 16

Weds
Apr 7

-Do group discussion of questions for pages 8-16.
-present responses

Journal #20: Using “My Name” (10-11) as an example, write a vignette about your own name. Some ideas: What does it mean?  How was your name chosen?  How do you feel about your name?  What name do you wish you had?  Does your name ever cause problems for you?  Do you like the sound of your name? If you could give yourself a different name, what would it be? Why? Etc.

-read pages 17-25
