Sera Arcaro holds a B.A. in English (summa cum laude) and an M.Ed. in secondary English Education from Ohio State University. As a Peace Corps volunteer, she taught English at a rural senior secondary school in Namibia for two years. She then moved to Dalian, China where she taught English to children and adults for a year, in addition to training new teachers. She returned to the U.S. and taught English for two years before joining the faculty at RCHS. She teaches 9th and 10th grade English.

Nadine Askins has the BA in English and the MEd in Counseling from NC State University. She brings many years of experience, most from Wake County Schools and one from the opportunity to work at Raleigh Charter in its second year.

Glenda Atkinson has the Bachelor of Science degree in Social Work from the University of Georgia. Before coming to RCHS, she spent several years working in the College Counseling Office at Wake Forest-Rolesville High School doing everything from applications and transcripts to scholarships.

Cynthia Brown holds degrees from Campbell University (Bachelor of Science) and Southern Seminary (Master of Church Music, Doctor of Musical Arts) and has a wealth of experience in voice, organ and conducting. She directs the choral and instrumental music programs and serves as the Chair of Fine Arts. Dr. Brown previously taught at Meredith College, Campbell University and Southern Seminary.

Steve Busonik holds a Bachelor's degree in Music Performance and a PhD in English from Ohio State University. He studied cello performance with Lynn Harrell at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and held a chair in the cello section of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra for several years before turning to English literature. He has experience in the corporate sector, having served as project coordinator for a software development company in Fairfax, VA before coming to Raleigh in 2001 to teach English at RCHS.

Scott Caudill earned a BS in Biology with an ecology emphasis from Baylor University and a BS in Science Education from North Carolina State University. He taught previously at Cary High School. He teaches Biology and Environmental Science.

Kristine Chalifoux before coming to North Carolina, taught advanced literature and writing courses at DePaul University where she was the Associate Director of the Liberal Arts and Sciences Honors program. She holds the BA in English from Arizona State University and the MFA from Columbia University.

DeeAnn Cherveny is a graduate of East Carolina University, where she received her Bachelor of Science in Special Education. She holds a license in Learning Disabilities from North Carolina State University and has been a special education teacher for Wake County Schools.

Laurie Cone earned Bachelor of Arts degrees in Chemistry and German from the University of Kansas. She worked for 13 years as an Air Pollution Scientist in Kansas City and RTP and earned an MS in Environmental Sciences and Engineering, from UNC-Chapel Hill. She also has studied Spanish at NCSU. Ms. Cone teaches AP Environmental Science.

Hoey Crain earned a Bachelors of Science degree in Construction Engineering and Management from Purdue University. Before coming to RCHS, he spent 15 years building water and waste treatment plants. Now he manages the computer network at RCHS and sponsors the school Webteam club.

Steve Efird is the athletic director at Raleigh Charter High School. He is a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill, and holds a degree in Exercise and Sport Science. Before coming to Raleigh Charter, Steve worked at Saint Mary’s School, in Raleigh, where he served as an assistant in the athletic department, basketball coach, and was the strength and speed coach. He has a wide range of athletic experience, including the management of the Gatorade program at UNC-Chapel Hill’s summer sports camps, and has coached for Networks Basketball. In addition, Steve previously taught physical education courses at St. Timothy’s School, and worked for Leadership Edge, Inc. in Durham.

Kenny Felder graduated from Enloe High School, barely. He then went to UNC-Chapel Hill where, in a determined effort to avoid making up his mind, he wound up majoring in English and Physics. After working for ten years in the software industry, he joined RCHS in 1999, where he currently teaches Algebra, Calculus, and Physics. He maintains a Web page with papers on Math and Physics topics. He has four children. He used to play ping-pong, racquetball, and chess, back in the day. He makes up harmonies but cannot read music. He dazzles small children with his ability to play any song on the guitar using only three chords. He wishes he could ski. He has gone bungee jumping, parachuting, and fire walking, but only once each. He knows the Beatles and Monty Python better than you do. He is a charter member of the Self Knowledge Symposium, which he considers far more important than the quadratic formula.

Andree Genez teaches Chemistry. She earned the AB in Biology from the University of California-Santa Cruz, the MS in Botany from North Carolina State University, and the PhD in Horticulture Science (with a minor in Biochemistry) from NCSU.

Eric Grunden has taught at the P.K. Yonge Developmental Research School in Gainesville, Florida, and at Rockdale County High School in Conyers, Georgia. He holds two degrees from the University of Florida—the BS in Chemistry and the MEd in Science Education. He teaches Enriched Chemistry, AP Chemistry, and Astronomy and coaches the RCHS Brain Game and Quiz Bowl teams.

Kern Hairston is an alumnus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he earned the BA in Journalism & Mass Communication. Having spent the last 15 years in the Undergraduate Admissions office at UNC-Chapel Hill most recently as Senior Assistant Director of Admissions, he joins the RCHS staff as college counselor and testing coordinator.

Whit Hames has taught in Moriyama, Japan, at Eastern Wayne High School in Goldsboro, and at Southeast Raleigh High School, where he was division leader for science. He has a BS in Biology from Michigan State University and an MS in Biology from James Madison University. He teaches Biology and AP Biology. Mr. Hames also coaches the RCHS Science Olympiad and Science Bowl teams.

Jerie Hobbs holds the BA degree in psychology from the University of Florida and the MS degree in school psychology from North Carolina State University. She is a licensed school psychologist and has worked in both educational and clinical settings. She teaches the curriculum assistance courses.

Lisa Huddleston is a graduate of Rice University with the BS in electrical engineering. She began teaching mathematics at RCHS in 2001. She has previously taught high school math, computer science, and physics in McKinney, Texas.

Tom Humble is Principal of Raleigh Charter High School. Tom has been a junior-high teacher in Durham County and a high-school English teacher in Wake County. He has a B.A. in History from UNC-Charlotte, a Master of Arts in Teaching in English Education from Duke, a Ph.D. in English from UNC-Chapel Hill, and both Principal's and Superintendent's licenses from North Carolina State University. Tom has taught in the Duke TIP Summer Residential Program and is an AP English Language and Composition consultant with the College Board.

Bob Hussey holds the Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Massachusetts and the Master of Science in Computer Information Systems from Bentley College. He spent 25 years in industry, 16 of which were in the Information Technology group of Ocean Spray Cranberries, Inc. He comes to us from Massachusetts where most recently he was teaching middle school math. He teaches Geometry at RCHS.

Carolyn Jackson received her BA in Psychology and teaching certification from Mary Baldwin College. Before coming to Raleigh Charter High School she taught at the elementary school level, in preschool and worked with the Education Programs of the National Humanities Center. She is the alumni and development officer.

Shayne Klein has been a member of the RCHS faculty since its founding. She has taught AP United States History, Civics and Economics, World History, and Minority and Women's Studies. Before coming to RCHS, Ms. Klein taught at Friends' Central School outside Philadelphia and at Carrington Middle School in Durham. She holds the BA from Amherst College and the MAT from Duke University. Ms. Klein currently serves as Academic Dean.

Amy Koch teaches Psychology and Biology. Prior to coming to RCHS, she was a Biology teacher at Southeast Raleigh High School. She has been a researcher at three universities. Her degrees, the BS in Biology and the MAT in Science Education, are from Duke University. In her spare time, Ms. Koch likes to read and spend time with her three children.

Mary Krawiec received a Master's Degree in Slavic Linguistics from the University of Pittsburgh in 1987. Originally from New Hampshire, she graduated first in her college at the University of New Hampshire, with a dual major in Spanish and Russian. Mrs. Krawiec has over fifteen years experience teaching ESL, Spanish and Russian in high schools and universities.

Amy Marschall holds the BA (Duke University) and the MA and PhD (The Johns Hopkins University). Dr. Marschall taught German language and literature at the college level before joining the faculty at RCHS in 1999. She is the translator of Heads or Tails: The Poetics of Money, a work of literary criticism by Jochen Hörisch. She teaches German and English.

Petra Martignoni received her teacher’s diploma from the State Teacher College in Bern/Switzerland. Additionally she majored in Philosophy and minored in German Literature at the University of Bern/Switzerland. Before moving to the USA, Mrs. Martignoni taught for several years and traveled extensively, mainly in Asia and Europe. She is teaching German I and II. Web site for course materials.

Charles Montague holds a BA in African, Asian and Islamic History from Washington and Lee and an MA in American History from Villanova University. Following his love of folklore and music, Charles advises the Sustaining Roots Music citizenship project at Raleigh Charter. Mr. Montague also advises the RCHS chapter of Amnesty International. When missing, Charles can be found fly-fishing pristine trout waters.

Betsy Newmark has a BA from George Washington University with a double major in History and Russian. Her MA is from UCLA in Slavic Languages and Literatures. She comes to Raleigh Charter from teaching 8th grade Social Studies at Carnage Middle School where she also coached the History Bowl and Quiz Bowl teams to state and national championships. Mrs. Newmark has also won the Time Warner National Teacher Award four years in a row. She teaches AP Government and Politics, AP United States History, and the elective America at War at RCHS. Hannah Page has a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from Millsaps College and a Master of Arts in Teaching in History Education from Duke University. She recently completed a Masters in Public Administration and Policy from the University of Georgia. Hannah taught U.S. History and Civics and Economics at Raleigh Charter for two years. She now serves as the school's community liaison, and works closely with the development team. Her office is always well-stocked with miniature candy bars.

David Palmieri holds a BA in Geography from Vassar College and an MA in Education from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Originally from Massachusetts, he has recently moved to North Carolina from Colorado where he taught history and geography at Monarch High School for nine years. He has traveled extensively in Latin America and has a special interest in Pre-Columbian Latin American history. He is also the sponsor for Model United Nations. While not teaching he enjoys hiking and backpacking.

She has taught French immersion at the elementary, middle and high school levels in Vancouver, Ottawa, Northern Quebec and Montreal, Canada. Raleigh Charter hired her in its opening year and she’s been teaching French there ever since!

A professional actor and director, she is a member of Actor's Equity Association, Assitej, and the American Alliance of Theatre and Education. Her education and direction credits include numerous positions and productions in Orlando, Seattle, Gainesville, and Raleigh.

Henry Rich teaches computer science, Latin, and calculus. A natural-born computer geek, he received a BS in Electrical Engineering from NCSU. He worked as a programmer, a consultant in computer hardware and software, and, eventually, a designer of flight simulators. He then spent ten years trading stocks for a living before coming to RCHS.

Mark Slattery served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Guatemala from 1985 to 1987 in the fisheries program. It was there that he learned Spanish and developed an appreciation for Hispanic/Latin culture. He has traveled extensively throughout Central America. He taught in Orange county for twelve years before coming to RCHS. He received the BA in journalism from Northeastern University in Boston and teaching certification in Spanish in his hometown of Framingham, MA.

Cheryl Smith helps maintain the “technology” (hardware and software) here at Raleigh Charter High School. She comes here after serving this same post for four years at The Magellan Charter School. Upon receiving the Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering from Duke University, Mrs. Smith relocated to North Carolina from New Jersey.

She teaches Algebra, Geometry and Calculus. Previously, Mrs. Soloman was an administrator in the First-Year College at NCSU, where she also held other teaching and administrative posts.

William Thelen holds degrees from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (Bachelor of Fine Arts) and the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill (Master of Fine Arts) and has exhibited art both nationally and internationally. Locally, he is represented by Branch Gallery in Durham, and has been the owner and director of Lump Gallery/Projects in Raleigh since 1996. He teaches Art 1 – 4, AP Art and Yearbook and is the advisor for the RCHS Art Club. Mr. Thelen has previously taught at Mt. Olive College, UNC-CH, and St. Augustine’s College.

As an Air-Force Captain, Mr. Wajima was a Professor of Air Science at the University of Virginia. Previously, Mr. Wajima has taught at Raleigh Charter High School (2001-2004) and with the Susami (Japan) Board of Education (2004-2006).

David West teaches Spanish. For five years he taught English as a Second Language at Wake Technical Community College. He has also taught at La Universidad Autonoma del Estado de Morelos (Morelos State University). Mr. West has also worked as interpreter and translator in the NC Office of the Governor, and he was the State Project Director for the Leadership Conference Education Fund. Originally from Raleigh, Mr. West is a graduate of Enloe High School. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Spanish Literature from Earlham College and his Masters in Public Policy Analysis from Duke University.

Liz Woolard is a National Board Certified Teacher in Physics. She is also a Presidential Excellence in Science Teaching award recipient. An honors graduate of Meredith College, she has her teaching certification in both physics and math and teaches physics at RCHS. She was Teacher in Residence in Physics at UNC-CH, 2008 and 2009. Liz taught physics for 39 years at W. G. Enloe High School where she was both math and science chair.
